Top Medical Research Studies

We conducted a detailed analysis using a robust two-sample Mendelian randomization study to explore whether omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play a role in sleep apnea risk. Our research involved data from nearly 8,000 individuals and over 25,000 sleep apnea cases.

Surprisingly, we found no genetic evidence linking these fatty acids, including DHA, to the risk of sleep apnea. This indicates that increasing PUFA intake or supplements may not be effective in reducing sleep apnea risk after all.

DHA/EPA improve sleep quality
We investigated how docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both omega-3 fatty acids, influence sleep quality in individuals aged 45 and older. In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study involving 66 participants, we found that those taking DHA/EPA experienced significant improvements in frequent dreaming and overall sleep efficiency compared to a placebo group.

This suggests that DHA and EPA can enhance sleep quality in older adults, even at lower doses than used in prior research.

DHA levels and sleep apnea severity
We investigated the relationship between red blood cell levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among 350 patients undergoing sleep studies.

Our findings revealed that higher DHA levels were associated with significantly lower chances of severe OSA. Specifically, patients with increased DHA levels were about 50% less likely to fall into the severe category of OSA compared to those with lower levels.

This suggests that DHA may play an important role in the severity of sleep apnea. Future research on DHA supplementation's effects on OSA could provide valuable insights.
